Confidentiality: You must have the ability to maintain the highest confidentiality by not discussing any testing material that is given to you or on any students’ testing performance with anyone outside of PNWU.ģ. Reliability: It is important for an SP to show up on time as scheduled.Ģ. The SP encounter schedule is typically made available one month in advance for SP's to sign up for the dates they are requesting to work.ġ. Each case we will train you to observe and document something different. These behaviors take place in three domains: history-taking, physical examination and communication/counseling. Your training will include learning to observe and document the performance of explicit clinical behaviors for your specific case that must be performed by the student. Since this is a hands-on examination, students will be required to lower your gown, touch, palpate, and examine the SP based on the chief complaint of the encounter. You will not be asked to take any type of medication nor have any blood or body samples taken for testing at any time during the exam. These would include listening to heart sounds, lung sounds, abdominal sounds looking in your nose, ears, eyes, mouth taking a blood pressure checking your reflexes and muscle strength and performing gentle osteopathic manipulative treatments. Your encounters for examination will include appointments you may see in urgent care or family care doctor’s office. You will be required to simulate the “patient’s” history, physical findings, and emotions in a repeatable and standardized manner. Īs a simulated patient at Pacific Northwest University College of Osteopathic Medicine (PNWU) you will be trained to portray, in a consistent, standardized manner, a patient in a medical situation. The Yakima Valley is a wonderful place to live, work and play. It is approximately 140 miles from Seattle, 170 miles from Portland, and 200 miles from Spokane. PNWU is located in Yakima, WA, a city of approximately 95,000 located in the south central part of the state near the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountains in a major agricultural and outdoor recreation region. The campus includes 300 employees with academic programming spread over a five state region. Interprofessional education partnerships with other universities adds another 100 students to the population. The University currently offers the degrees of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Doctor of Physical Therapy, and Master of Arts in Medical Science enrolling over 550 students annually with plans to develop other programs and/or colleges.
